You can help your child obtain citizenship

Normally, children in American gain citizenship at birth. However, if your child was not born in America, then natural citizenship is not how they will obtain it unless one of their parents is a citizen of the United States.

If your child is not from the United States but you are, then you have an opportunity to help them obtain citizenship without having to wait for adulthood. As a U.S. parent or the spouse of a U.S. parent, there are special naturalization provisions that you can use to help your child obtain citizenship.

What are the requirements for the naturalization of children?

First, the individual has to be the adopted son or daughter, legitimated son or daughter or genetic son or daughter of the U.S. citizen. That citizen does not have to be a citizen since birth; they can be any citizen who has been naturalized as well.

Nongenetic, gestational children of U.S. citizen mothers may also obtain citizenship through the naturalization provisions. This is particularly important for children of surrogate mothers.

What if you don't live in the United States?

Living in the U.S. isn't necessarily a requirement to obtain citizenship. However, your child will need to be in the United States lawfully when the petition for citizenship is filed and once the application is approved. The child must be under the age of 18 at the time of naturalization.

These are a few things you should know if you want to have your child naturalized as a citizen of the United States. It's a long process, but it's worth it.
