Understanding a crime of moral turpitude

When you come to the United States, it should be with the understanding that you will benefit the community you live in. When people immigrate to the U.S., the only thing the government really wants to see is people who want to live in the country peacefully. Those who commit crimes could be deported, especially if those crimes are crimes of moral turpitude.

Crimes of moral turpitude are, in essence, crimes that shock the conscience. Things like murder, homicide and crimes with "evil intent" all fall under this categorization. In the United States, people who are accused of crimes or moral turpitude and have visas may face deportation. If you have committed such a crime before obtaining a visa, entry into the United States may be impossible on those grounds.

Is there a list of crimes of moral turpitude?

No, there isn't. That's part of what makes it so hard for individuals to fight deportation. The category is loosely defined, which makes it possible for the immigration judge to have a great deal of control over who stays or leaves the country.

Although there is no official list, the crimes that may be considered of bad moral turpitude include:

  • Child abuse
  • Rape
  • Voluntary manslaughter
  • Theft
  • Animal fighting
  • Conspiracy
  • Murder
  • Spousal abuse
  • Kidnapping
  • Aggravated assault
  • General mayhem
  • Involuntary manslaughter (in some limited cases)

If you are facing a charge that could be considered of bad moral turpitude, you will be in a difficult position and could be deported upon conviction. It's necessary to defend yourself quickly to protect your rights.
