In recent months, every other day seems to feature headlines about aggressive tactics and legal questions surrounding the current role of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. The actions of ICE are front and center in the immigration debate going on in all parts of the country right now.
However, many immigrants and those who support immigrants' rights may do themselves a disservice by focusing exclusively on ICE, at least if they live here in Georgia. While immigration raids that are carried out by ICE are certainly worthy of concern, ICE is only one aspect of law enforcement when it comes to immigration. Often, undocumented immigrants run into trouble with the law for very small violations that turn into major headaches and not necessarily sweeping raids by officers in ICE uniforms.
For instance, small traffic violations make up a huge portion of arrests that lead to deportation or detainment, especially if the person driving does not have a drivers' license or insurance. These violations, although relatively minor in the big picture, may cause a person to be deported if the matter is not properly addressed.
If you face even a small criminal charge or a traffic violation as an immigrant, it can spell huge trouble if you are undocumented or if you simply have re-entered the country illegally or overstayed your visa. You must make sure to use all the legal resources that you have available to you in order to deal with these matters quickly and effectively to protect your rights and the best interests of those you love.
