What offenses can result in deportation?

If a person lives in the United States as an undocumented immigrant, he or she may be subject to deportation even without committing any other specific crime. Under the current laws, it is already considered illegal to live in the United States as an immigrant if one does not enter legally, in most cases. Therefore, almost any violation may result in deportation.

In many cases, even relatively small issues like traffic violations can result in deportation because such incidents alert immigration officials to the presence of an undocumented immigrant. Once Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) knows of an individual who lives here as an undocumented immigrant, it may, in some cases, remove that person without him or her necessarily violating any other laws.

It is very important for undocumented immigrants to understand that any criminal violation is a problem if they choose to plead guilty. When it comes to immigration courts, the legal system considers any guilty plea equal to a criminal conviction. This will almost certainly result in deportation of an undocumented immigrant. If you or someone you love who's undocumented is charged with any crime, you will likely want to fight these charges with every resource that you have.

While it is difficult to avoid deportation once charged with a crime, it is not impossible. The nature of immigration law in our country is shifting, and some undocumented immigrants have better fortune than others when it comes to defeating deportation simply because they take the time and effort to fight the process. Do not wait to begin researching your legal options and building a strong defense.
