What does the administration expect for immigration law reform?

You may be one of the many people here in Georgia and across the country waiting for the Trump administration and Congress to figure out what will happen with immigration reform. Recently, the administration released details regarding what it considers talking points for negotiations.

It's not ideal that the futures of so many individuals rest in the hands of people they will never meet, and keeping track of their negotiations may seem futile. However, having at least some understanding of what the White House expects may give you some idea of what you could face.

Here is some of what the White House expects

Below are the top talking points outlined in the recent summary released by the administration:

  • The visa lottery: According to the White House, eliminating the visa lottery would free up 50,000 visas to help decrease the backlog of people attempting to gain entry into the country.
  • Family sponsorship: The administration wants to limit family visa sponsorship to only spouses and children under the age of 18. This would eliminate the ability to sponsor other family members such as siblings and parents, among others.
  • The wall: The White House maintains there is a need for a wall between the borders of the United States and Mexico. To that end, it requests $25 billion in funding to make it happen.

Some say that border crossings do not encompass the majority of those who are living in the country without the proper documentation. Instead, the majority have stayed after their visas expired.

Limiting the options

Many say these proposals limit the opportunities available to those who want to be here legally and want to become citizens of the United States. In addition, people who have overstayed their visas may be deported quickly and without the opportunity to avail themselves of any other legal options to remain in the country.

Many people are taking a "wait and see" approach to what could happen, but that might not be the best solution. If you anticipate that you may be subject to any of the limitations these proposals create, it may be beneficial to be proactive. Discussing your situation with an immigration law attorney now may provide you with the opportunity to take legal steps that may allow you to remain in the country.
