What you need to know about the end of childhood deferment action

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), was put into place in 2012. Unfortunately, it is coming to an end. Initially, the program was announced by the secretary of Homeland Security as a way for people who came to America as young children to request deferred action. The deferment could be filed for a period of up to two years. During that time, the individuals would be able to work and prevent deportation proceedings.

Did DACA provide lawful status in the United States?

No. DACA was not designed to grant lawful status or citizenship. Instead, it gives individuals more time to fill out the correct documents to obtain lawful status. Those under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012, have the right to apply for DACA; however, since DACA is ending, each case is handled individually as its received. The only cases reviewed today come from current residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

As of Feb. 15, 2015, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services were ordered to stop accepting requests for DACA. The temporary injunction has led to the current halt in acceptance, which means that no one in the United States illegally is exempt from possible deportation proceedings or enforcement.

Immigration into the United States is complicated enough, but if you've lived here your entire life, you can't be expected to go back to a country you never knew. If you face immigration enforcement proceedings, you need to know your legal rights, so you can fight to stay in the country lawfully.
