Reasons requests for American visas are most often denied

Before a visa is awarded to an immigrant wishing to come to the United States, it's commonplace for an interview to have to take place with an official at one of the American embassies or consulates beforehand.

It's during that interview that questions about an immigrant's intentions for coming to the United States are discussed. It's also during that interview that any lingering questions about that individual's visa application, including their family, work or criminal history are raised.

In most cases, the consular official will render a decision to either approve or deny an applicant's request for a visa at the conclusion of that interview. The state department reports that a large majority of all applications received are approved. In cases in which they're denied, though, the denial could have happened for one of many different reasons.

One of the more common reasons a visa request would be denied is if the applicant was found to have not been able to provide enough supporting information to prove that he or she qualifies for the visa class he or she has applied for. The second most common reason for a visa denial is if the applicant is found to fall short in meeting the immigration eligibility or admissibility requirements set by lawmakers.

An applicant having been convicted of certain criminal offenses, such as drug offenses, fraud or violent crimes, may make him or her ineligible to qualify for a United States visa. Having previously overstayed a visa may make an individual ineligible as well.

If you've been convicted of a crime in your home country or are concerned about how some other type of issue may impact your ability to secure a United States visa, then a Norcross, Georgia, immigration law attorney can help.
