Sanctuary cities swarmed by ICE agents in mass arrest mode

Immigrants in sanctuary cities around the country were arrested in by the hundreds this week by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on orders from the Trump administration.

Federal authorities announced that "Operation Safe City" focused directly on those immigrants living in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and New York City. A total of 498 undocumented individuals were arrested over four days. Slightly fewer than two-thirds of the arrested individuals had criminal records here.

One of ICE's executive associate directors said, "We are never going to stop enforcing the laws that we're authorized and required to do. If we need to go into these locations every week, we will . . . to remove these public safety threats."

These actions targeted the jurisdictions defying federal efforts to deport undocumented immigrants living in the sanctuary cities. The administration has thus far been stymied in most efforts via executive orders to strip grant money from these locales.

Jurisdiction restricts the cooperation between local agencies and ICE agents. Some locations bar ICE from accessing information from local jails or refuse to provide federal agents with data about undocumented residents who got arrested locally.

Immigration advocates claim that police don't have authority to enforce these civil immigration laws. They warn that this will only make law-abiding immigrants afraid to report criminal acts.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus' chairwoman stated the "raids are simply another attempt by the president and his anti-immigrant chiefs to bully cities into undermining the constitutional protections of all [their] residents, irrespective of their immigration status."

There is no doubt that this is a perilous time to be undocumented in America. If you are a Georgia resident without the proper immigration documents, you may wish to learn about any legal recourse that you may have to fight deportation.
