Tips from the ACLU for dealing with immigration agents

Many people live under the threat of deportation. To help them know how to handle immigration agents, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) provided a list of tips.

First and foremost, they advise not opening the door for the agents right away. You may not be legally obligated to do so. In many cases, they have to have a signed warrant. Instead of just opening the door, ask if you can see it first. They should be able to simply press it against a window so you can read it or slide it inside the house.

If you do not speak enough English to converse with them successfully, remember that you can ask them to bring you an interpreter. It's important that both sides fully understand everything that is being said. A small amount of miscommunication can have dire results.

Stay silent and cooperate, even if you think the agents are acting illegally -- if they force the door open without a warrant and come into the home, for example. Yes, your rights may be violated by such an action, but responding with force is not beneficial. Instead, just try to keep everyone quiet and tell them you want to talk to your legal representatives.

If your lights were really violated, there are steps you can take to protect yourself in court. This can be a very frightening and troubling experience, but it's critical to know what rights you have, how they were violated, and all of the legal options at your disposal. Immigration agents are bound, after all, by the constraints of the law.
