Trump presidency may mean big changes for immigration law

Now that Donald Trump has been elected president of the United States, it is reasonable that many immigrants may be carefully considering their next few steps. While no one knows exactly how the Trump administration may take actions that affect the immigrant community, there are more than a few troubling pieces of immigration rhetoric lingering from the campaign trail.

As with any presidency, it is impossible to know which talking points from a campaign will lead to decisive action. One needs to only to look to Barack Obama's stump speeches about closing Guantanamo Bay to illustrate this point.

According to what can be inferred from the campaign trail, several key immigration policies may be up for grabs in the upcoming months. Obama instituted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to grant those who were brought here illegally as children a temporary reprieve from deportation. Both DACA and similar actions by the Obama administration that allow immigrants to avoid being detained while awaiting their cases to be processed have been specifically targeted by Trump in stump speeches.

Trump also built much of his grassroots support by promising to build a physical wall along the border between the United States and Mexico. Whether this actually possible, it is a powerful symbol of the attitude his administration may take toward immigration. The plain truth is that immigrants in the United States, both documented and undocumented have good reason for great concern, but it is not known if or when any of the looming threats may materialize.

If you are concerned about protecting the life you are building here in the United States, the best thing you can do is form a relationship with an attorney who has a heart for defending the rights of immigrants before you need one. This way, you can take all the steps necessary to stay ahead of the volatile law as it may change in the near future, keeping as many of your rights protected as possible.
