Some say U.S. Immigration Law antiquated

The debates surrounding immigration and naturalization policies in the United States remain ongoing and often contentious. Many say that U.S. immigration law in Georgia and throughout the nation is outdated and in great need of reform. It has been suggested that the reality of the border and the nation's immigration policies are not appropriately aligned.

In 2015, statistics stated that more than 44 percent of those detained by border patrols were of Central American decent. At the beginning of this year, at least half of those detained were from ethnic backgrounds other than Mexican. In fact, it has been said that many more Mexicans are entering the United States on work visas now, rather than crossing the borders illegally.

Apparently, in fiscal 2015, less than 200,000 of those apprehended by border authorities were Mexicans. This seems to be a stark difference from the million detained in fiscal 2005. The asylum process for Central Americans and Mexicans is reportedly slower and more complex. Those advocating a need for system reform say the courts are clogged with backlogged cases because the current regulations for asylum do not meld with the reality that the larger proportion of those crossing the borders are non-Mexicans.

There are also apparently far more families and children with no accompanying adults seeking residence in the United States. Many such immigrants take up residence in Georgia. If a person is struggling to understand U.S. immigration law as it relates to his or her status or personal situation, guidance may be sought through an immigration and naturalization law office.
