Process for replacing a green card

Some Georgia residents will need to apply for a replacement green card in certain circumstances. When necessary, people may initiate the process by filing a form I-90 either electronically or via the U.S. postal system.

There are numerous reasons why a person may need to replace a green card. A replacement may be required if the original document was lost, stolen, destroyed or mutilated. In addition, those who received their cards before age 14 and who have reached their 14th birthdays will need to apply for a replacement card. Other replacement card might also be necessary if a person who has commuter status intends to take up permanent residence in the United States or if a permanent resident wishes to change their status to that of a commuter.

Other reasons may include incorrect information on the green card or if the previously issued green card was never received. In the event an application for a replacement green card is denied, people are able to ask that the denying office reconsider its decision by filing a motion to reconsider or reopen.

U.S. immigration law can be very complex. Although applying for a replacement green card may seem like a relatively straightforward process, the applications may be denied in some cases. People who need to seek a replacement may want to seek the help of an immigration and naturalization law attorney. An attorney might help with completing the application and submitting it. In the event it is denied, they may help with filing the motion to reopen or the motion to reconsider.
