Obama prepared to defend new immigration policies

Georgia residents who are aware of President Obama's recent executive actions may be interested in statements he made during a recent town hall immigration forum. He told attendees that there will be consequences for federal agents who do not follow the new immigration policies. In November, Obama launched two programs aimed at providing work permits for up to five million immigrants who are living in the United States illegally and to halt deportations.

There has been significant controversy over the programs. According to Obama and his supporters, he has the power to make these changes to immigration law. However, 26 states disagree and have filed lawsuits against the president alleging abuse of executive power. In February, a U.S. District Judge in Texas agreed with the states and temporarily blocked the two programs. In response, the Obama administration requested an emergency court order to undo the judge's decision and filed an appeal. This legal maneuvering will allow the programs to begin while the appeal moves through the court system.

The president has repeatedly called on Congress to provide a lasting solution for the immigration system and has emphasized the fact that his executive actions are temporary. Most observers agree that the current immigration system does not work and needs reform.

Immigration law is complex, confusing and subject to change. A lawyer with a background in immigration cases can explain to clients the status of current laws and requirements. In the event that a client is facing deportation, a lawyer can provide representation and legal assistance in order to halt the removal.
