What is Deferred Enforced Departure?
Through his executive power of dictacting foreign relations, the President of the United States may authorize deferred enforced departure for nationals of certain countries when deemed necessary. The nationals of countries designated for deferred enforced departure may be eligible for a temporary stay of removal (deportation) from the country and receive authorization to work in the United Statees during the period of DED.
Currently, only nationals of Liberia are eligible for deferred enforced departure. To be eligible, these individuals must qualify under the rules for DED and have been granted TPS as of September 30, 2007. Temporary protected status for Liberian nationals ended on October 1, 2007. Deferred enforced departure for qualified Liberian nationals is presently set to expire on March 31, 2009.
Many other factors, of course, apply to whether or not an individual qualifies for DED.
