Law enforcement pushing back against sanctuary cities

As 2017 marches on, law enforcement throughout the United States continues to crack down on enforcing immigration law to its limit (and sometimes beyond). While the country as a whole is very divided on the issue, the White House continues to direct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to commit greater and greater resources to identifying immigrants who violate a wide variety of laws and prosecuting them with severe consequences.

Now, ICE has announced that it is ramping up its focus on sanctuary cities and pushing back against the local policies many places have instituted to add a layer of protection for their immigrant residents living in fear.

ICE and other law enforcement agencies continue to contend that those who do not break the law face no danger, but the reality of living in America is that there are many, many ways to violate a law — even if you're "one of the good guys."

For instance, immigrants who commit even small traffic violations may trigger harsh consequences. In virtually no other circumstance is a person who commits a traffic violation considered a criminal, at least not in a social context. When one considers the widespread (if unsubstantiated) reports of law enforcement focusing attention and resources on immigrant communities in traffic patrols and other operations, one can fairly easily create a picture of law enforcement operating within the law while still treating fellow human beings unfairly.

If you or someone you love is an immigrant, there is no way to get around the fact that your actions are under a microscope for the time being. However, you do not have to fight this fight alone. If you face any criminal charges at all, do not hesitate to reach out to an immigration defense attorney who understands how to fight for your fair treatment and protect your rights.
