Trump changing his tone on immigration

For immigrants throughout the country, the world has been a much more frightening and unsure place for much of the last year, but especially since the election of Donald Trump for president. While there are still many concerns within in the immigrant community, there are also some indications that not all of the worrying rhetoric that populated Trump's campaign trail will become reality.

While the president-elect is still calling for the construction of his infamous wall along the border of the United States and Mexico, his stances on other elements of immigration may be softening. For instance, he has stopped calling for the swift deportation of some 11 million undocumented people from the United States, and has also walked back on his proposal to ban Muslim people from entering the country.

Particularly hopeful is the new way that Trump seems to be approaching the plight of those who would be affected by the cancellation of an executive order by Obama. The order allows those who were brought into the country as children to acquire work permits and remain in the country. In a recent interview with Time magazine, Trump offered, "We're going to work something out that's going to make people happy and proud. They got brought here at a very young age, they've worked here, they've gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs." While it still remains to be seen who the Trump administration will ultimately affect the lives of immigrants, there are some glimmers of hope that it will not be quite as bad as many of us have feared.

Even in a best-case-scenario, there will be many challenges facing the immigrant community in the upcoming years, whether through unfair policies or simply from those who are emboldened in their discrimination. If you are facing a legal issue related to your status as an immigrant, it is important to get the help you need. An experienced attorney can help you adjust course and protect yourself and your family as new challenges and threats arise.
