Employment immigration permit revoked, man sues government

A situation has developed in another state that may impact the lives of some immigrants in Georgia and throughout the nation. A man whose employment immigration permit was revoked has filed a claim against the federal government. The lawsuit seeks a declaration from the federal court in his home state that the ruling of the federal court in another state should not have bearing on his personal situation.

The man suing the government is reportedly the first undocumented immigrant to ever do so with respect to this particular issue. He was brought to the United States as a 7-year-old child. He attended school, then went on to work several jobs to try to pay for post secondary education. He is attending college in the hope of earning a degree as a medical assistant.

Many recall the contentious battle that erupted in 2015 when a federal court in Texas brought a halt to President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals plan. A year earlier, the president had taken steps to increase work permit times for those eligible to three years instead of two. The now 26-year-old man who has filed a claim stated that he received a three-year permit, only to have it revoked a few months later.

It appears the man's permit was revoked after a deadlocked vote in the U.S. Supreme Court meant the ruling of the federal district court in Texas would stand. However, in his claim, the man asserts that what is done in Texas should not govern his life in New York. He further claims that because his work permit was revoked, he is unable to pay back his college loans. Many are watching this particular employment immigration litigation since its outcome may affect the lives of Georgia immigrants and thousands of others across the nation.
