Where to find help regarding child citizenship issues in Georgia

In 2000, a law was enacted whereby children who are adopted from other countries and brought to the United States automatically become naturalized citizens. Known as the Child Citizenship Act, the law eliminated the need for foreign-born persons who have been adopted by parents in the United States to submit applications for citizenship. Certain stipulations apply in order to be eligible for automatic naturalization regardless of whether a family plans to reside in Georgia or another state.

In addition to being younger than 18, a foreign-adopted child must have at least one adoptive parent who is a born or naturalized citizen of the United States. The child must also be residing within the nation's borders under the physical custody of the parent who is a citizen. Also, the adoption process must have taken place in adherence to all U.S. Immigration Laws that apply to the situation.

The criteria for children residing overseas but adopted by parents who are U.S. citizens is different. These children must make a legal visit to the United States, and their parents or grand-parents must meet all eligibility requirements pertinent to their situations. There are often various forms and documents involved in such processes, which can be complicated and difficult to understand, especially if language barriers exist.

In Georgia, there are immigration and naturalization attorneys who are experienced in providing guidance to those facing child citizenship problems. Anyone with questions or concerns regarding these or other immigration issues may request a meeting to discuss an individual situation. It is always advisable to seek clarification of the laws that govern such matters and seek assistance where needed rather than attempt to address a situation without benefit of knowledgeable counsel.
