Some say young man has been in immigration detention far too long

A young man crossed the borders into the United States when he was still a child of minor age. He was apparently fleeing a violent situation in his native land. Events unfolded in January 2016 that led to him being placed in an immigration detention facility in Georgia, and many say he has been there far too long and should be permitted to return to his home in another state.

Reportedly, the 19-year-old was placed under arrest by Immigration Customs and Enforcement officials outside his parents' home. For the past six months, he has been held in detainment. It seems that in March, a judge issued a deportation order against the teenager after he had allegedly failed to appear in court on a scheduled date.

Those acting on his behalf have demanded his release, saying the facility where he is detained functions like a private prison, with shocking amounts of oversight. A stay was issued against the deportment order just days before the Honduran immigrant was slated to be sent back to his country of origin. His advocates claim that since that time, he has been placed in isolation and should be released and permitted to return to his family members as there is no good reason for keeping him detained.

Among other complaints regarding substandard care at the immigration detention center, those speaking in the immigrant's favor say he is being denied an education. An official decision was made to re-open his case to consider an application for asylum. Such situations are often complex and can be very confusing and stressful for those who may not understand U.S. Immigration Law or may be challenged by language barriers. An immigration attorney would be able to assist anyone in Georgia facing similar issues.
