Child citizenship should have guaranteed driving privileges

In Georgia and other areas across the nation, there are many teens preparing to take their driving tests. Some of them are children who have been adopted into their families. Some of those adopted were actually born in other countries but automatically became U.S. citizens through the Child Citizenship Act.

U.S. citizens are eligible for driving privileges according to the laws of their states. One young girl has been hoping to get a driver's permit in Tennessee. However, even though she has studied and has apparently followed all the rules and regulations governing such matters, she has been denied eligibility unless she can show more proof of her citizenship.

The teen was adopted as a 1-year-old. Representatives at the driving services office told her she must show a Certificate of Citizenship before obtaining a driver's permit. This document reportedly costs as much as $600. The girl's adopted mother tried to explain that her daughter automatically became a U.S. citizen as soon as she was brought to the United States because of the 2000 Child Citizenship Act. However, the driving office reps said they want more proof.

The girl's mother expressed her frustration, saying her daughter should not have to prove something that was automatic, and she further claimed that her child has been a U.S. citizen for 17 years. The mother plans to file a formal complaint with the Tennessee Department of Safety. Because situations involving child citizenship or other immigrant-related issues can be complex and legally complicated, anyone facing such circumstances in Georgia may wish to consult with an experienced immigration and naturalization attorney for guidance.
