Immigration detention debate rages on in Georgia

Georgia is among many states where politicians, private citizens and others continue to debate immigration topics in the Unites States. At the top of the list is immigration detention and potential deportation of thousands of immigrants. The White House defended its policies on a recent Friday afternoon.

Immigrant advocates accused the current administration of practicing "inhumane" policies that seem to target Central American families. It has been reported that during May and June 2016, hundreds of Central American children and mothers will be sent back to their native lands. These families are accused of entering the United States illegally.

A White House spokesman said, however, that no immigrant who has sought asylum or humanitarian relief will be deported. There are currently more than approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants within the nation's borders. Those who believe the United States should help immigrants fleeing extreme poverty and violence say that placing these families in immigration detention centers and threatening to deport them is not helping them at all.

One person said there is a huge difference between an illegal immigrant and one who is seeking asylum. Obviously, there is no immediate end to such debates in sight. In Georgia and all other states, however, there is legal help available to anyone dealing with such issues on a personal level. Whether facing immigration detention problems or concerns regarding an adjustment of legal status, a consultation with an experienced immigration attorney may provide the clarification and counsel needed to make informed decisions moving forward toward a successful future.
