Immigration detention deaths blamed on inadequate medical care

A coalition group that advocates on the behalf of immigrants recently reported an ongoing problem in many of the nation's detention centers. Apparently, inadequate medical care remains problematic in many immigration detention facilities outside of Georgia. Some claim this has led to an increase of in-custody deaths.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement review board has been investigating the deaths of immigrants in various detention centers. Spokesmen say the problem is growing more serious, and some states appear to be worse than others. A woman speaking on behalf of ICE stated that the department takes any death of an immigrant held in its custody very seriously. She also mentioned that many detention centers have instituted more rigorous standards to help prevent such tragedies in the future.

Causal factors in at least eight of the deaths investigated under the recent review were deemed to have been associated with non-compliance to medical standards. A 54-year-old man in Arizona died at a hospital after detention center staff members allegedly took too long to contact 911 for help. The man had apparently been complaining of chest pain and other symptoms. It was also determined that staff members failed to communicate with the man's translator, who told officials that he had been complaining of symptoms for weeks.

Another man who died in 2015 was said to have committed suicide. However, other detainees at the immigration detention center claim he had been beaten. The man's family members have stated that they do not believe he took his own life. Anyone in Georgia who has suffered adversely because of inadequate medical care in a detention facility or other related issues can seek legal assistance by contacting an immigration and naturalization lawyer in the area.
