Immigration official may get post in Georgia jail

Fulton County, Georgia had previously limited its cooperation with deportation agents, which had many immigration advocates happy with the new direction law enforcement seemed to be going. Unfortunately, according to newly released documents law enforcement is now considering allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to position an agent inside its jail.

The main concern for immigration advocates is that this new post would allow ICE to keep track of foreign nationals regardless of criminal conviction or charge.  After so much hard work and progress made by advocates and officials, giving ICE agents an in-jail post is being called a huge step backward.

In recent years, law enforcement has been criticized for its involvement with ICE and its handling and treatment of immigrants. Immigration advocates and ICE critics have said that they were concerned over the constitutionality of police involvement with ICE and how it may impact their image within the community.

As of right now ICE agents are allowed to enter other jails, such as Los Angeles to interview dangerous criminals prior to their release. These agents do not have a post in the jails and can only interview those not protected by the California Trust Act. These restrictions are meant to give ICE the ability to recognize dangerous criminals without involving every detained immigrant in deportation proceedings.

Although it is unknown how much involvement Fulton County jail will allow ICE to have with their detained criminals, simply considering a post has created an uproar among immigration advocates. For individuals that feel their rights have been violated by ICE or other authorities, speaking to a trusted immigration attorney may help.
